Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 7/2/03

Dear Friends,
There wasn't much new on the Clearinghouse in May or most of June, but at the end of June we had new things to add popping up all over:

CURRENT RESEARCH
Museum of Vertebrate Zoology resurvey of 1914-1920 Grinnell Transects over the next two years
See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/research/index.html#BIOLOGY for a link to the Yosemite NP press release

LINKS
Web Index of California Plants - while CalFlora is down due to lack of funding, use this CNPS resource.

California Digital Conservation Atlas - GIS maps of California online. So new that it doesn't work quite perfectly yet, but potentially a tremendous online resource.

Adaptive Management Practitioners' Network - includes resources and abstracts on adaptive management.

CalPIF Bird Conservation Plans link updated (see also below under ONLINE REPORTS)

See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/links/index.html

ONLINE REPORTS
North Mono Basin Landscape/ Watershed Analysis, USFS 2002 Draft. 55 MB and a 6 MB appendix.

CalPIF Bird Conservation Plans - The California Partners in Flight (CalPIF) program, made possible through funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and significant contributions of time and funding from many other CalPIF partners, has completed six habitat and bioregion based Bird Conservation Plans (BCP's) for Riparian, Oak Woodlands, Coastal Scrub and Chaparral, Grasslands, Coniferous Forests, and the Sierra Nevada Bioregion. Plans are in development for Shrubsteppe and Desert habitats. The CalPIF program is part of the international Partners in Flight Initiative.

Trihalomethane concentrations in groundwater injected with reclaimed water, by USGS

See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/onlinereports/index.html (look under "OTHER" for general documents like the Watershed Analysis and the Mono Basin EIR).

RAW DATA, FIELD NOTES, AND PHOTOS
1976 Notes on Birds in Windstorms, from Elliot Burch's journal (Mono Basin Research Group).

Lee Vining Weather Summary for May 2003
The first half of May was cold and snowy. The second half of May was hot and dry.
22 = lowest May temp since 2000 (May 9th)
91 = highest May temp on record! (May 28th)
0.63" = highest May precip since 1996

Lee Vining Weather Summary for June 2003
Missed the last 4 days of the month due to a computer crash. Warmest minimum June temperature since 1997 (otherwise beats every June back through 1990). Wettest June since 2000.

Mono Basin Real Time Data Explanations Page
Updated to reflect LADWP's May 1st runoff year forecast of 74% (1.4% higher than April 1), surprisingly low compared to nearby basins and considering the wet spring. DWP's computer problems continue, with many stations being unreliable and the site often not updating for days.

Tioga Pass opening and closing dates since 1933 updated.

See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/index.html

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
1908 and 2001 photos of the northwest shore of Mono Lake. 2001 Photo by Peter Metropulos for the Mono Basin Photopoint Project. This page isn't finished yet, however this is so cool we had to put these photos online!
