Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 5/7/03
Dear Friends,
On April 24th, a fast-moving wind-driven fire sparked by snapped power lines
near the Lundy Canyon Road burned to the Lundy Powerhouse, the side of Copper
Mountain, Mono City, Conway Ranch Estates, and Conway Ranch. About 800 acres
burned. All houses were saved, however power was out for a couple of days.
Wilson Creek, Conway Ranch meadows, ditch control structures, and the fish
rearing ponds burned. Many fish were killed. However, the burned area is fairly
narrow, and new grass is already coming up! Now here's what's new in the virtual
world:
RAW DATA
PRBO May 2003 Post-fire Observations along Wilson Creek
See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/2003fireprbo.htm
Lee Vining Weather Summary for March 2003
Warmest low temperature and driest since 2000.
See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/weather/200303.pdf
Lee Vining Weather Summary for April 2003
Wettest since 2001 (otherwise beats every April on record back through 1988) and
coldest since 1999. April showers bring May flowers: May-June 2001 was a great
time for wildflowers, so get ready!

Mono Basin Real-time Data Explanations Page Updated
Page updated for the 2003 runoff year based on the April 1st forecast. Will
revise soon based on May 1 forecast. Additional information provided on Grant
Lake Reservoir levels (when the marina can operate). Minimum flow information
for Rush Creek clarified--previously left out information on required flows when
inflow to Grant Res. is below minimum. Aside from Grant Lake Res. Elevation and
Mono Lake Elevation, other real-time stations appear to be working.

CURRENT RESEARCH
The Mono Lake Microbial Observatory moved to their own Website: http://www.monolake.uga.edu/.
The pages have been removed from the Mono Basin Clearinghouse and a link has
been added in their place.
ONLINE REPORTS
Peter Vorster's Master's Thesis, "A Water Balance Forecast Model for Mono Lake,
California", May 1985. We've included it in the Clearinghouse due to its
popularity--it was always checked out from the Mono Lake Research Library. This
is the last of the scanned documents that 2002 intern Peter Lang finished
scanning in December.
