Shorebird Count Results - An Excel file now shows the fall counts for each year side by side.
2002 Fall Mono Lake Fall/Shorebird Waterfowl count: With a total of 16 volunteers, we covered the entire Mono Lake shoreline including the landbridge island (nearly 50 miles of shoreline) between 8AM and 4:30PM on August 24, 2002. The weather was sunny, with a light wind out of the north, high temperature of 80 degrees F.

This year we counted over 40,000 birds among 48 protocol species. Notable highlights included: Egyptian Goose along the Black Point shoreline (origin unknown, but probable wandering domestic), Long-tailed Jaeger at County Pond, a Solitary Sandpiper beyond Wilson Creek delta, a Sabine's Gull near Castle Tufa, Snowy Plover chicks at Simons (Samman's) Springs, and 7659 American Avocets, a fall shorebird count high for the last 6 years. Thanks to this year's volunteers. If you would like to volunteer next year, mark your calendar for August 23, 2003, and contact Bartshe Miller.
