Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 8/6/02
Dear Friends,
Thanks to Mono Lake Committee Intern Peter Lang's tireless efforts at getting a
clean but small PDF file out of our new OCR scanning system, we have several new
reports available online. The most exciting one is Dombrowski's ever popular
1948 report on waterfowl numbers at Mono Lake (see below under "Raw Data"). Now
Peter has the scanning process dialed in, he is scanning all the missing parts
of the Mono Basin EIR (mostly figures). If he has time to get it all done by the
end of the summer, we should be posting these missing pieces in the fall!

CURRENT ONGOING RESEARCH
-------------------------------------------------------
Tom Hahn from UC Davis was kind enough to summarize for us the three projects he
is involved with in studying birds at Tioga Pass: Long term study of the biology
of Mountain White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha), Biology of
Cassin's Finches, and Comparative reproductive biology of Cardueline Finches.
See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/research/hahn.htm
Tom also informed us about the research on Gray-crowned Rosy Finches that
Matthew Richardson from the University of Washington is doing at Tioga Pass. We
hope to get more info from Matthew soon, but for now we link to his unfinished
Website.

LEE VINING WEATHER SUMMARY FOR JULY 2002
-------------------------------------------------------
One of the highest mean and low temperatures, and the highest high temperature
for July (98.4). On the same day that high was set (July 10), Bridgeport had an
all time record high of 98. 11 days were warmer than 90 degrees this July (4 in
2001, 10 in 2000, 4 in 1999, 9 in 1998). Note that 1.05 inches of rain on the
26th is in error due to altitudinous garden watering that day.

ONLINE REPORTS
-------------------------------------------------------
The National Academy Press has posted the National Research Council Report on
Mono Lake on its Website: The Mono Basin Ecosystem: Effects of Changing Lake
Level (1987). We sold this in our bookstore until it went out of print a few
years ago, and it seems to be a popular item to check out of the Mono Lake
Research Library.
We link to it from Online Reports: http://www.monobasinresearch.org/onlinereports/index.html#OTHER
Aquatic Habitat Characteristics and Trout Demography In Selected Sections of
Five Eastern Sierra Streams, by Donald W. Sada, May 6, 2000.
Previously unpublished, from one of the largest Sierran trout datasets ever
compiled.
