Subject: Mono Basin Clearinhouse Updates for 7/5/02
Dear Friends,
-------------------------------------------------------
CALTRANS MONO LAKE WIDENING PROJECT UPDATE
-------------------------------------------------------
Deadline for getting letters to the governor is extended through the end of
July. The head of Caltrans from Sacramento will visit Mono Lake July 11 to see
for himself what is happening. This is good news. The Local Transportation
Commission will consider a proposal from its chair, Kathy Cage, to add a
variable width shoulders alternative to the DEIR/EIS. This, too, is good news.
Mono Lake Committee member letters have had a significant impact! Thank you!
Please see our ACTION ALERT for details: http://www.monolake.org/caltrans/actionalert.htm.

CURRENT RESEARCH: BELDING'S GROUND SQUIRRELS
-------------------------------------------------------
A young ground squirrel has a rough life--only 40-60% of juveniles survive until
their first fall, and then up to 60% starve their first winter. To help out
their kin, females have different alarm calls to warn each other about avian vs.
terrestrial predators, but by calling they double their chances of getting
eaten. Dr. Jill Mateo from Cornell University has provided us a great writeup of
her local research (at Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory and at sites in
Rock Creek Canyon, the Lakes Basin, Mono County Park and Tioga Pass), including
photos, and her website with links to published papers available online.

draft form, and when we get the final we will post it.
