Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 6/5/02

Dear Friends,
Not too much new on www.monobasinresearch.org this month, but we sure have been busy with other matters. Caltrans is finalizing their Draft EIR on the Mono Lake Highway Widening Project, and still has not included an acceptable alternative (other than the "no action" alternative). We are trying to get as many letters to California Governor Gray Davis as we can between now and June 28 encouraging him to direct Caltrans to fix the problems with the EIR BEFORE they release the draft. If the EIR is finalized as is, and the Final document doesn't contain an acceptable alternative, it will probably lead to litigation. Please write a letter if you can.
Please see our ACTION ALERT for details: http://www.monolake.org/caltrans/actionalert.htm.

REAL TIME DATA EXPLANATIONS PAGE
-------------------------------------------------------
Our companion page for LADWP's real time hydrologic data webpage has been updated to reflect the hydrologic conditions for this year. Runoff is expected to be 81.7% of average. LADWP so far has not responded to our requests for some of the information we usually have here, specifically their lake level forecast. We'll post the predicted lake level when we get it. The Real Time Data Page continues to have problems--during the peak of the snowmelt runoff (right now), the real-time streamflows haven't updated since May 28th. This is probably due to the same regional phone line problems that crashed our WebCams.

LEE VINING WEATHER SUMMARY FOR MAY 2002
-------------------------------------------------------
Data is missing for the last 3 days of the month (due to the above-mentioned phone line problems). Considering that, it was the coldest and driest May (for mean and lowest temps) since our internet weather station began operating in 1996 (and precip has been recorded since 1998). There is an extra .09 inches of precip shown due to errant garden watering of the rain gauge on May 27th.

TIOGA PASS OPENING / CLOSING DATES
-------------------------------------------------------
Tioga Pass opened on May 24th this year.

UPCOMING
-------------------------------------------------------
We are looking forward to receiving information on two research projects. One, for the Current Research listing, will be more details on Tom Hahn's (UC Davis, formerly Princeton) bird studies near Tioga Pass (not just White-crowned Sparrows, he tells us). The other is a report (under review/revision since March, awaiting publication) from Chris McCreedy at PRBO on the Willow Flycatchers nesting along Rush Creek. And we just missed the researchers that were collecting scat from Belding's Ground Squirrels at Mono Lake County Park last weekend, but hopefully we will track them down to add to our list of current research.
