Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 11/4/01
Dear Friends,
We have lots of new and updated items on the Mono Basin Clearinghouse this
month!
RAW DATA
Real time data explanations updated
There is a frames page that shows LADWP's real time data page along with
explanations (from MLC) of what the data actually means. These explanations had
been last updated in April, and now they are updated for the October-March
period. The minimum flows for each creek are bolded so you can quickly gauge how
the actual flow compares to the Water Board-ordered minimums. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/mbrtdframes.htm
Mono Basin Riparian Plantings and Survival, 1993-2000. A table showing the
numbers of trees planted in revegetation efforts since 1993. Shows species
planted at each location for each year, and at least one subsequent survival
count for each. At the bottom there is a summary table showing totals for
everything and broken down by stream. In the future we hope to add maps showing
locations of plantings.
Planted Surviving (at last count)
Cottonwood 1189 827 (70%)
Willow 1273 711 (56%)
Jeffrey Pine 1687 682 (40%)
Lodgepole Pine 187 76 (41%)
total 4336 2296 (53%)

Piezometer data, Rush and Lee Vining Creek, 1995-2001. This year all of the
piezometers on Lee Vining Creek went dry by October 18. Around July 15th flows
dropped below 40 cfs and after August 1, groundwater levels plummeted to levels
not yet seen in A2, B1, C1, C2, and C3. This is the first time A1, A2, B1, C1,
C2, C3 have ever been dry since they were installed, and the first time B3 has
been dry since the 1997 flood. For Rush Creek, except for Piezometer 2, October
2001 had the lowest groundwater levels since Channel 10 was rewatered in October
1995. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/index.html#HYDROLOGY
August 25, 2001 Shorebird Count. Lots of American Avocets on the north shore. We
have data online for our shorebird counts as far back as 1997. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/index.html#BIRDS
Weather Summary for October 2001. October 2001, based on the records of our
internet weather station that go back to 1996, had the warmest low and warmest
average temperature for any October since at least 1995. September 2001 was the
warmest September as well. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/weather.htm
LINKS/GIS DATA
We've added a couple of aerial photography resources to the GIS page. The
Fairchild Aerial Photography Collection at Whittier College is a great resource
for aerial photos taken all over the state of California between 1900-1950s.
Mono Basin aerials include 1929, 1930, and a 1953 or 54 mosaic. Thanks to John
Bair who gave me quite a bit of info about this resource. Also listed on the GIS
page are the 1999-2001 aerials that DWP has had flown and are available through
IK Curtis using Photomapper software. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/gis/index.html
ONLINE REPORTS
Gravity Modeling of Black Point, a “Surtseyan” style Tuff Cone, near Mono Lake,
California, a Senior Thesis by Jim Schneider, UC Davis. Does not contain
figures. This is the first undergraduate research we have posted on the
Clearinghouse. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/onlinereports/index.html
