Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates for 4/29/01
Dear Friends,
NEW SERVER; GOOGLE SEARCH
We have switched to a new server that not only offers us additional space and
bandwidth, but additional features that will be useful for monolake.org and
livinglakes.org (and possibly monobasinresearch.org in the future).
Unfortunately, the new server does not support the Excite search engine we used
to search individual directories, and I haven't yet fully investigated our new
options available to us. However, in the interim, the new search engine we are
using is nothing to complain about! It is Google's University Search. It uses
Google's excellent search engine (free to educational
institutions) and even searches Adobe PDF files, a quality we've been looking
for in a search engine for a while! You can also search the rest of the World
Wide Web from the same page with the click of a button!
One possible drawback is that the search is only as fresh as Google's index of
our site. Google says they refresh their index approximately every 30 days, so
if you read about something new in this (approx. monthly) update, chances are
you won't find it in a search for another 30 days. Another possible drawback is
that Google doesn't guarantee full coverage of an entire site, but from what I
can tell they don't miss much. Email me if you notice any
problems or have any suggestions or ideas. I will continue researching better
search methods. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/search.htm
LIST OF MONO COUNTY GIS COVERAGES
Thanks to Nate Greenberg of Talon & Associates who provided a list of Mono
County's GIS coverages. He said he'll be gone in about two weeks until August,
so if you want any of these coverages contact him now or then. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/gis/
REAL TIME HYDROLOGIC DATA COMPANION PAGE
Last year LADWP finally launched their real-time data Website, which is a great
way to check on current hydrologic conditions along the L.A. Aqueduct. In order
to make this data more understandable to those not intimately familiar with the
hydrology, infrastructure, and legal requirements that shape the streamflows and
reservoir levels, we have created a frames page with explanations to help you
understand each Mono Basin hydrologic station. It also mentions some of the more
common errors you might see in the data. If you have ideas for something else
you'd like to see explained or added, let me know. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/mbrtdframes.htm
UNSUBSCRIBE
If at any time you decide that you no longer wish to receive these occasional
updates about additions to this Website, please e-mail unsubscribe@monobasinresearch.org
and ask to be removed from the list.
Thanks for your interest in Mono Basin Research!
Greg
