Subject: Mono Basin Clearinghouse Updates 11/28/00
Dear friends,
PRBO GULL RESEARCH REPORTS ONLINE
We now have the yearly reports online since 1992 with the exception of 1994. Big
thanks to Dave Shuford for e-mailing these to us. They are in Adobe PDF format,
and unfortunately some of the earlier reports have slightly different formatting
than the original (still very readable, however page breaks may be in different
places). These are the reports that cover the population size and reproductive
success of the California Gulls nesting on the Negit Islets. http://www.monobasinresearch.org/onlinereports/gulls/index.html
MONO LAKE MICROBIAL OBSERVATORY UPDATE
Tim Hollibaugh sent us a lengthy and informative (and entertaining!) description
of their May 17, 2000 Mono Lake Station 6 vertical profile, and the figure and
caption can be found here http://www.monobasinresearch.org/research/microbial/figure.htm.
He and Sally MacIntyre also sent us captions to the photos, so now you know what
you are looking at here: http://www.monobasinresearch.org/research/microbial/index.html.
Also of interest, but not posted on the Clearinghouse Website, was part of an
email discussion between Tim and Sally that was cc'ed to Bob Jellison and
myself:
"I'm curious, Tim, if you found Picocystis at inshore sites, particularly if
there was any strong wind forcing, during the summer. You will be amazed at the
large amplitude oscillations of the thermocline all around the margins of the
basin due to strong wind forcing. As a result, lots of high frequency waves are
spawned. We think that the mixing is due to those high frequency waves. At
inshore stations, where temperature stratification is similar to what you show
at Stn. 6 (old?), internal wave amplitudes would likely be in excess of 5 m. We
don't know about mid-lake amplitudes because the data from that chain is not yet
available, but work on similarly sized L. Kinnerett suggests that wave
amplitudes would be much smaller. Hence vertical mixing much smaller."
1895 MAP OF CALIFORNIA
In the Historical Information section there is now a link to an 1895 map of
California. It shows counties, communities, water features, mountains, and
railroads such as the Bodie Railroad. There is not a lot of detail for Mono
County, since it is a statewide map: in Mono County it only shows the
communities of Topaz, Coleville, Bodie, Lundy, Mono Lake (Mono Mills), Benton,
and Hammil. In California and parts of Nevada it shows other terminal lakes
along the Pacific Flyway before dessication, such as Tulare and Winemucca Lakes.

GIS DATA
We have added a list of the GIS data sets available from the Inyo National
Forest. Thanks to Laurie Otterman for sending this to us, and volunteer Mona
Kremer for tracking down some of the GIS sources. Also there are links to a few
other sources of GIS data online. This list will be improved and targeted more
to the Mono Basin as time goes on. See http://www.monobasinresearch.org/gis/index.html
NEW LINKS
We have added a few new links to other useful Websites. Links include:
Macroinvertebrate ID Key - PEERS database of 37 aquatic invertebrates, with
photos or drawings. Searchable by number of tails, common name, number of legs,
pollution sensitivity, and order.
Modular Modeling System (MMS): A Modeling Framework for Multidisciplinary
Research and Operational Applications
Stream Corridor Restoration - Principles, Processes, and Practices. Federal
Interagency Stream Corridor Restoration Working Group. Site contains projects,
samples,
slide shows, discussions. Also contains Links to Restoration Websites. See

SPREAD THE WORD!
A lot of people still don't know about the Mono Basin Clearinghouse, found at
www.monobasinresearch.org. Tell others that you think might be interested,
especially scientists and policymakers! The only people currently on the list
that are receiving this update are: Dave Marquart, Cole Hawkins, Sacha Heath,
Margaret Rubega, phildesfish, Jane Huston, dlw38, Jeanne Adams, Geoff McQuilkin,
Arya Degenhardt, Heidi Hopkins, Santiago Escruceria, Scott Stine, Peter Vorster,
Dave Winkler, dwsada, Dave Shuford, Dave Herbst, Cliff Morris & Bonnie Bittle,
and Bob Kucer. If you see someone missing that should get this, forward this
email to them and tell them to send an email to updates@monobasinresearch.org
asking to be added!
NEXT UPDATE
Due to the time demands of other projects, I am not planning any new updates to
the Clearinghouse until January (with the exception of the November Lee Vining
weather summary). Among things we are expecting to add then are a project
description of Dave Herbst's Alkali Fly Monitoring that his assistant Paul
Levine tells us he is sending us (including images of GIS maps showing
monitoring locations that volunteer Kelly Runyon created in June). So until
then, Happy Holidays!
UNSUBSCRIBE
If at any time you decide that you no longer wish to receive these occasional
updates about additions to this Website, please e-mail unsubscribe@monobasinresearch.org
and ask to be removed from the list.
Thanks for your interest in Mono Basin research,
